In all, tanning a hide takes an average of four weeks and it requires several skilled trades. Various artisans will work on the skins, to turn them into leathers with differing characteristics in terms of their suppleness, firmness, color, smell, and feel. A satin-finish can be applied to both grained and smooth leathers, in a process that involves passing the leather between two heated presses.
